Pase bien, Ecuador

Image
Here we are. Almost ready to go. Our last two weeks have been complicated by a transit strike that has paralyzed the country. Groups of indigenous laborers have taken on the government in interest of fuel subsidies, limiting mining activity, and more funding for healthcare and education.   Read more about the Paro here In this edition of Lo Que Pase, we each provide some sort of reflection of our time in Ecuador.  Susie shares Some Thoughts About Leaving Ecuador Nick reflects in Two Hearts, Two Places Sam tells it like it is in Every Rose Has Its Thorn Locke’s got his top 5 in My Time In Ecuador Robin sums it up in Time to Leave We also wanted to share with you a couple of playlists that have become the soundtrack of our lives. Guardarraya, a fun band we saw at the Cuenca independent music festival Welcome back to Lo Que Pase. Since our last post, the Beesley family has settled back into a life of routine in Cuenca. The kids are all fully in the swing of their classrooms and now have friends and know when they have assignments due. It’s been a truly amazing process to watch them acquire near fluency in Spanish. And Nick and Susie have become immersed in various projects like volunteering and writing, studying and creating. We’ve started to forget what we miss and almost feel at home here. We’ve been on far fewer adventures outside of the city, which has allowed our Cuenca life to become fuller.  Beautiful Cuenca at night Chess with the neighbors Riverside fire with friends Friday night zumba in the park Carnaval festivities at Robin’s school Carnaval!! Sam with his friends from school. One of these is not like the other….. Robin with her classmates Lunch with friends Sam at school Susie gives a mother/dau...

Aquí estamos

Aquí estamos      Here we are. It’s been almost 5 months since we left Anchorage and 3.5 months since arriving in Cuenca. And it’s been 2 months since our first blog post. It turns out, we are not super bloggers! We hope that this next installment of “lo que pase” finds you and yours well. We will be missing family and friends over the next week as it is the season of celebrating community and giving thanks. We give thanks for our lives, our health, each other, the earth and it’s abundance, and each of you, our community, We plan to celebrate “día de acción de gracias” by cooking an Ecuador-adapted thanksgiving meal for our neighbors, who have become friends.      In our second blog posting, you will again find a contribution from each Beesley. This installment is mostly about getting out lives set up in Cuenca and weathering some of the storms that have come with adapting to life here. We each will give you a glimpse of our Ecuador lives.  Susie...
